I currently live in Columbia, Missouri with my husband and two crazy cats (as opposed to me being a crazy cat person). The journey to MO included stops in Detroit, Michigan; Lynchburg, Stuarts Draft & Waynesboro, Virginia; Elkton, Maryland; Highland, New York; and Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Over the course of a four year period, I had seven different addresses. SEVEN. I’ve come to think on those four years much like Moses’ time in the desert while God prepared him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt – dry, barren and alone much of the time.
Thankfully, and also like Moses, that period has ended and this new season in life is filled with community. Columbia is a city rich in music and the arts. My husband and I are members at Karis Church which emphasizes being a gospel community on mission. We spend a week every summer at camp with inner-city kids from Kansas City in conjunction with City Union Mission. I have enjoyed volunteering with several groups throughout Columbia: Central Missouri Humane Society, Sol House (a refuge for homeless teens), First Night, and True/False Film Festival. It finally feels like I’m at home.
