Day 24: Fill In The Blank

(Insert pain here.)

The thing you can’t escape.
The suffering that constantly returns to haunt you.
The secret agony that no one knows.
The public pain that makes everyone stare or look away.
That is your pain in that blank. (more…)

Day 23: We Are Called To Rest

October has poured out some hard days. The missed days in my 31 Days series are not from forgetting or even laziness, but from having no extra strength or emotional energy to share. I’ve stared at a blank page and haven’t been able to put anything down. Not for lack of ideas. I’m trying to push past it; but as you similarly emotional people out there know, it’s not always easy to do. (more…)

Day 21: When Broken By Sin

A Clean Heart

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin! (more…)

Day 20: When Fighting Unbelief

Indelible Grace Music has retuned an old Isaac Watts hymn. We’ll be singing it at Karis tomorrow morning. I love when a song can be sung as a cry from the heart to the Lord.

This is just a sampling of the lyrics, some of my favorite lines.  The lyrics seem to range from every high and low:  from obedience, to unbelief, to acknowledging unworthiness, to hearing the call and, finally, to answering with ringing confidence in Christ. Whew! Powerful words, Mr. Watts. (more…)

Day 19: When We Finally Give Up

Continuing yesterday’s more quiet reflection with a little Sufjan Stevens:

(The artwork in this video is by Chris Koelle.)

This song was first introduced to me when Karis Church sang it during a Good Friday Gathering. Isn’t it hauntingly beautiful?

Day 18: When The Spirit Groans

What an interesting journey this 31 Days has been so far! Before October 1st, I brainstormed topics and settled on 31 Days of Prayer for the Hurting.

I thought, “Lots of people are hurting, lots of people need prayer, this should make it easy to write every day.” Little did I know the challenge ahead.

Knowing that blogging daily would still be a challenge, I plotted out topics to talk about every day of the week and then thought through some potential focuses for each day. I decided to stay flexible about choosing the specific topic, but this way I had ideas ready to go in case I felt stuck.

Oh, yes, I love my green pen!

My careful planning really only got me about 5 days in and then things started happening.

How do I explain… (more…)

Day 17: When Scarred By Abuse

No Trespassing (Photo credit: justmakeit)

Dear God,

It’s beyond my understanding why some people experience the trauma of being deliberately, selfishly hurt by a person they love or trust. I cannot fathom why someone would purposefully act in a way that would carve a lifetime of scars in another person’s psyche. It’s hard to even speak of the heinous reality of abuses such as,

  • teacher to student
  • father/mother to child
  • boyfriend to girlfriend
  • church leader to lay person

Oh, the ugly depths of sin! (more…)

Day 16: When Drowning In Grief

Some posts touch you more closely than others. At some point this month, I’d hoped to do a day of prayer for people who have lost a loved one; but this has hit so close to home recently:

  • A colleague where I work unexpectedly passed away last Monday.
  • My college roommate’s darling father went to be with the Lord just Saturday.
  • A couple of months ago, a good friend lost her baby in a miscarriage.

Slightly more removed, but still tender:

Grief. It hits each one of us differently; yet we’re bonded by shared loss. (more…)

Day 15: When The Lover Of Your Soul Sings Over You

My favorite prayer in scripture is when Jesus prays one last prayer with his disciples just before the final events leading up to his arrest & crucifixion, recorded in John 17.

What I love most is in verse 20:

I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word…

He’s praying for his disciples; but then goes on to include anyone who would in the future believe in him.

That’s me! And, if you know Christ, that’s you, too. Imagine Jesus prayed for you just before he died!

I hope you’re not tired of posts with songs, because here’s another one as God, the bridegroom, singing over his Beloved. This prayer is one that the Lover of your soul sings for you throughout scripture. (more…)

Day 14: When Praise Is All You Can Muster

The first time I met the woman who would become my mother-in-law, she was quite blunt with me.

Because his mom was visiting, Tom had invited a bunch of friends to his house after church to hang out (he and I were only friends at that time).  Being of a melancholy disposition, I was kind of bummed that night – for no particular reason. When his mom asked me if I was coming, I indicated that I wasn’t really feeling like being around people. And she said, this woman I’d only just met,

You just need to go praise the Lord!”

Excuse me? Who do you think you are?

I didn’t say this, not wanting to be rude, but really!?! (more…)
