Looking for splotches

Splotches.

As defined by me, a splotch is a glimpse of grandeur where you least expect to find one. A breathtaking mountain vista seen from the middle of a city; deer in the woods as you bike down a path; the moon, full and glowing when you round a bend; a friendly face in a sea of strangers.

A peek at the hand of God.

My college days were spent in a beautiful southern city just an hour from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Driving around town, I would repeatedly find my gaze drawn away from the daily bustle to the beauty of the distant mountains. I affectionately termed these visual delights as “splotches.” It was always a pleasure to have a getaway to those mountains and my daily splotches were reminders of the beauty and peace found there.

So often, in our daily lives, we forget to step back and see the bigger picture, the way that God is working and designing a beautiful thing in the midst of the ordinary. It may be in the innocent laughter of a child, the painful cry of a lonely heart, or the quiet moments in a busy day. Join me as I seek to point out these splotches, to take notice of the unnoticed, to revel in the beauty that God has set around us. Be on the lookout for splotches in your own life.

What glimpses of beauty have you seen recently? The new fallen snow? Children rejoicing in Christmas?  Or something completely different?
